How old are you?
I’m 14 years old
Is 3D your Job? Do you want to be a full time 3d artist in the future?
Right now I’d say that 3d is my job, I’m doing asset packs and tutorials over on patreon and It’s going pretty well. I really wanna do 3d/creative stuff in the future but still not fall into the trap of working for a big studio where you’re just a small little piece in a puzzle.
How long have you been using blender?
For almost exactly 2 years, started in June 2019
Why did you choose blender? Was there a reason?
I was a curious 12 year old who had 10 dollars on his account so Blender was the only option. Turns out that was a great choice.
Why do you prefer 3d over other forms of art?
I just like being able to create stuff that could be reality. Originally I wanted to film actual short films but I realized that I didn’t have any actors so being able to make art all on my own was a game changer. I could create whatever I wanted
What’s your advice for beginners?
Make sure to keep it fun, and build up a habit of googling small questions. You can learn anything very quickly if you have access to google and an interest in the subject. Another thing is to put in daily practice, the best way to pick up a skill.
Community Questions
How many hours per day do you work in Blender?
my average is probably 3h, but it can range from no blender to 10h
How do you stay productive every day?
By trying new things and wanting to see the finished result. I at times get really demotivated and feel like quitting, that’s usually when I’ve been doing the same thing for too long of a period. At those times I usually find something new and more difficult to do.
As for what many people have said, what’s your reaction when people call you Ian Hubert Jr.?
I usually find it flattering and take it as a compliment but at times it can be a little annoying as it can feel like people think I’m trying to copy him. Which I really don’t wanna do.
What’s your way of working efficiently?
Mapping out what I want to do, what the challenges will be and knowing what the shots will look like. If I have all of this figured out before starting the project I can really optimize what I’ll need to do, not wasting time on modeling/texturing unnecessary stuff.
Where do you get inspiration?
Usually from Pinterest or random stuff I see in the real world
If you had to try another art style, what would it be?
oooh, interesting question. Probably a mix between 2d and 3d like “spiderman into the spiderverse” and “mitchels vs the machines”. It’s something that feels like a real challenge but also something that would be really fun to figure out how to do.
What is your number one advice to improve the visual quality of your render?
Use reference!!!! If you already know how to use the software you just need to look at reality and recreate it. You’ll notice once you start getting into realism you start seeing all the small details in the world around you, this is your brain trying to store that info for later. Usually our memories can be pretty vague so using reference is always a great way for better results.
What are your tips on making things photo-real?
Basically the same as the one above
What’s your secret on working so fast?
Basically the same as the “What’s your way of working efficiently?”
How intense do you work on improving your skills? Like watching tutorials, visiting classes…
I tend to google if I need to learn anything new, I don’t have to do that as often though because I already know my way around most of the stuff. Just making these instagram projects is my way of learning and improving, It’s always a new challenge I need to overcome.
Have you started working with clients?
I used to do it but stopped due to not having time. I want to spend as much time on Patreon making that as good as possible, there I get to do whatever I want and spread the knowledge and also make a living from it.
Which project is your favourite so far?
Hmm, hard one. The most enjoyable making was probably the “recreating a scene from ian hubert” with that car driving or the pwnisher submission. The best results i’ve gotten yet is from my upcoming short “Takeout” or the Krueger project I did. You can watch them right below:
Why do you make so many buttcheek renders?
hahaha, It’s an inside joke with some of the guys over in discord. We basically decided to stretch out the cheeks of the “Default Guy” and it just looked hilarious. It’s kind of the Susanne but for the discord server.
