Blender Artists Interview #1 – @Space_meerkat

3 Mins read

How old are you?

I am 22!

Is 3D your Job? Do you want to be a full time 3d artist in the future?

Well in the freelancing sense, yeah. But a full time job – no, not yet. I would love to do that for a living though!

How long have you been using blender?

I’ve been using and learning Blender for about a year and a half now. I had no prior 3D experience before starting though.

Why did you choose blender? Was there a reason?

Well, first of all, it’s an opensource software, meaning it is free and open to everyone! Another thing is the community. It Is filled with wonderful artists that support and help each other, that might be the most valuable thing there is when you are in the creative industry. There is also a lot of tutorials available, so it is much easier to grasp the program and learn new things, unlike for some other softwares.

Why do you prefer 3d over other forms of art?

In 3D, there are almost endless possibilities. I am not constricted by materials and resources. All I need is an O.K. computer and good imagination (and knowledge of course, but that comes along the way). I used to draw a lot, I still love to but don’t as much. But compared to real-life creating, you can see how 3D saves time and a lot of other things!

What’s your advice for beginners?

Ever since I started, I don’t think there was a day that I didn’t work in Blender a bit. My advice is, practice every day, even when you really really don’t feel like it! It helped me to get where I am now with my art and skill set (I am not saying my work is perfect, there is always space for improvement) in a rather short timespan.

Community Questions

Why is purple the dominant color in most of your latest renders?

I am not sure honestly haha. When I was starting out, I was posting a variety of styles, themes and topics. I was searching for my style. I realized I could try out some holographic-based art and I ended up really enjoying those hues. And the basis for holo is almost always purple, so I guess that’s why. I do like other color palettes and I do have a color theme change in plan pretty soon.

Do you use color palettes?

Usually, the colors kinda come from experimenting, but whenever I need some inspo, I go to Adobe colors and check it out!

Sticking to similar colors and style really helped me grow my profile and online presence.

How to develop a consistent art style as you have?

I must say, sticking to the similar colors and style actually really helped me grow my profile and online presence, so there might be something there. I did a LOT of experimenting (and you can see the variety of my work in my earlier posts) with models I use, shapes, scenery, styles. I was following other artists to see what they do… See what you like and enjoy to create, stick to a color scheme and don’t give up on it for a bit. You will post some good renders and some shitty renders. But you will develop consistency. And you will see over time if that is something that represents you and your creative soul the best, or if you should move on to something else. Just keep playing!

How do you perfect your lighting? How much time do you spend on lighting alone?

One thing: HDRI!!! But if I am using studio light, I am doing the basic three point lighting, although I often increase the intensity of the light that shines on the sharpened part of the object I am creating.

How do you manage time?

Honestly, I work really fast. I don’t know how and why, but it really doesn’t take me a lot to make one render. I don’t spend more than half an hour on one. Quite often, the render time is longer than the time it takes me to model the whole thing haha. It does help to create some models and scenery and have an organised folder with textures and this and that. Then you can reuse the models you made and have all the things you need a click away.
